Tonga shockwave

Seen on the BAA-RAG forum.  Anyone notice any effects on other LF/VLF signals? Lots of excellent results from pressure sensors on Twitter, and a very striking time-lapse of the pressure waves crossing the USA from Tomer Burg on Twitter:

Plenty of reports of seeing the long-path pressure wave around 0130 UTC in the UK, plus a large single event in Africa at the antipode of Tonga.

http://136.su/index.php/topic,436.0.html

http://www.i1wqrlinkradio.com/antype/136_khz.html

rn3aus.narod.ru

Hi Edgar,

It was quite strong here this morning ~0800. In contrast BBC4 (198) was
very weak.

Hi LF

I have been running the QRP beacon in 137.484 almost continously during last months. The power consumed is very low and the Arduino + Si5351 runs all the FST4W modes + WSPR2 every hour. Even in this summer solstice season it is very interesting to compare performance of the different modes
Special thanks to DL0AO team, as they run decoders in ALL this modes. So it is possible to compare them

This are the results of last night shorted by distance and filtered by unique monitor stations

FST4W-1800 shows as the best mode for long distances, but the 900 variant is quite close. See the results at SV8RV (2x1800 and 1x900)
M0LMH is monitoring 900 and 1800 mode. Wsprrnet sometimes reports it as Mode2 and others Mode15. But I transmit 900 at 30 minutes pass the hour
DL0AO decodes FST4W at 1800, 900 and 120. But also at WSPR2. But I must say that WSPR2 and 120 frames are transmitted more than once
every hour. This modes are transmitted from minute 50 to 59 at a rate of 3x120 and 2xWSPR2. So, they have more chances to be decoded
DF6NM got 3 decodes at 1800,  but Markus is only decoding that mode
OE9GHV seems to be decoding just WSPR2. Only one decode
HB9TMC is reported as decoding mode 1800, but he is also decoding mode 900 with the same callsign. That's why he got 9 reports over night
when nights now don't provide 9 hours of good conditions in LF

I plan to keep the beacon as long as possible. And may be increasing power a bit. But actually the low power and great gain of the 90m vertical
makes an outstanding combination. Other option is to combine Tx with Rx periods. That would need sacrifiying mode 1800 and use 900/300/120/WSPR2
Or just do it reverse:Tx just at 1800

Make your bets ;-)

Domino EX Micro

Domino EX Micro?

DominoEX Micro is a soundcard-based digital mode designed for
the 2200 meter, 600 meter, 160 meter, and higher amateur radio bands.

https://sites.google.com/site/kl4yfd/home/dominoexmicro

For owners of Juma 136 and 500 kHz transmitters:

I just found that there is a firmware upgrade that allows for the transmission of DFCW, JASON, WSQ2, OPERA, WSPR, FST4W, and JT9. This is in addition to the QRSS and CW modes already available on JUMA TXs. The firmware was written by Patrick F4GCB. The firmware was posted on the JUMA board:
http://www.board.jumaradio.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=415

I haven't tried it yet, so don't blame me if it 'bricks' your JUMA !
It may be incentive enough for me to fix my LF/MF antennas and give it whirl!

New distance record in the 152 km band

Hello dear friends of the really low frequencies,

I can report about a further successful experiment at ULF: A 5 character
EbNaut message, transmitted at 1970.005 Hz from JN39WI has been decoded
successfully at DL7NN in JO60IS, a distance of about 380 km.
It is 2.5 wavelengths distance in the 152 km band. I guess this is a new
record distance for hobby radio experimenters.

The antenna current was 2.75 A into a 1130m ground loop.

Details of the decode command line and results can be found in the
attachment. The decode was worked out empirically in a cooperation by
DL7NN and DK7FC. A new 3-axis antenna was used at DL7NN.

Ebnaut!
QRB = 380 km.

Hello LF and VLF group,

Today there was a two-way VLF EbNaut QSO between DK7FC and DL7NN. We
used 8K21A, 1 second/symbol, CRC16 and 20 characters.
The distance is about 380 km (JN39WI to JO60IT (my RX is located in
JN49IK)). The frequency was close to 8270 Hz, the 36 km band. Details
below.

It was inteded just to do a test to prepare for a QSO that should be
done later but the signals were so strong that we were able just to do
it.

My TX power was just about 340 W and i got 2.2 A antenne current on a
1130m ground loop antenna (60 Ohm DC resistance today).

Furthermore there was a carrier on 5170.005 Hz from my side with 2.4 A
antenna current between 10:32 and 10:51 UTC. It was immediately detected
at the other side. Maybe Albrecht can tell more later.

Finally there was a 5 character EbNaut message, 16K23A, CRC16, 2
seconds/symbol starting 12:30 UTC, which was also immediately decoded by
Albrecht!

That's a successful day which seems to show that even much lower
frequencies are possible between us.

We're planning another QSO with 100 characters per message :-) But i
need to work on the ability to generate shorter than 1 second symbols
for that...

73, Stefan

P.S.

 Finally there was a 5 character EbNaut message, 16K23A, CRC16, 2
seconds/symbol starting 12:30 UTC, which was also immediately decoded
 by Albrecht!

That was on 2970.005 Hz !

Т.Е. до P out < 5W.

==============

Thank-you for the reports. It's wonderful what can be done with
QRP on LF.

The TX is a DOXO/ad9850/arduino, keyed with a raspi to a
class E running at about 10 volts DC. This feeds a rotated L
aerial 100m long and 20m high.

It will be QRV for the next few days.

Hello SLF friends,

Once again i want to report about another successful experiment in the
SLF range, where i'm trying to reach lower and lower frequencies.

This time a 5 character EbNaut message was decoded on a new lowest
frequency: 176.5 Hz, the 1700 km band!
As usual, the path between TX and RX is 57.6 km. It is a H field, near
field experiment.

The TX antenna is a 1130m ground loop antenna. The average transmitter
power was 460 W and the antenna current reached nearly 3 A.
Two nightly transmissions had to be stacked to obtain the SNR that is
necessary to decode the message. Each transmission takes 2 hours and 7
minutes.

Despite the lower performance of the RX loops (single turn, abt 1m
diameter, 10mm copper tube, ferrite transformer 2:240 turns, low noise
preamp) at that frequency i even got a higher SNR than in the recent
experiments at 221.5 Hz and 263.55 Hz. Does the TX antenna become
significantly more efficient on such frequencies?

The transmissions have to be done at night. The tram close to the RX
location is producing a lot of QRM and there is just a 3 hour period at
night when it does not drive arround. This is when i can be on the air
without to much interference.

The first transmission was done on January, 19th, the second on the
31th. It is noticable that the level of sferics in the SLF range becomes
stronger already, so the season for such experiments will be over soon!
Due to the presence of such QRN, it turned out that it is helpful to add
a litte E field component, although the E field does not contribute to
rise the signal level. It just helps to lower the noise level by forming
a cardioide antenna steering away from the QRN and thuse increases the
SNR.

Also it was helpful not just to aply the auto notch filter within vlfrx
tools but also to watch the outcoming filtered and blanked spectrum and
then add further discrete band stop filters to disable sidebands
appearing a few Hz arround arround strong QRM peaks, like 150 Hz and 300
Hz.

As usual, the attached screen capture shows the signal post-processing
and message decode and resulting SNR of the stacked transmissions.

The next step is somewhere between 100 Hz and 150 Hz :-)

73, Stefan
